Schaaf leaves Werder Bremen by mutual consent

Werder Bremen have announced that head coach Thomas Schaaf will leave after 14 years at the club.

Werder have struggled in the Bundesliga, [this season] and
only secured their safety in the German top flight with one game to play as
they drew 1-1 with Eintracht Frankfurt. Therefore, in a meeting between the club’s
management and the 52-year-old, it
was agreed that he would leave the club by mutual
consent.

Since joining the club in 1999,
Schaaf guided them to a league and cup double in 2004 as well as three DFB-Pokal trophies. He also oversaw the club’s
four UEFA Champions League campaigns in his 644 matches in charge.

A statement on the club’s official website paid tribute to
the outgoing manager and the success he had brought to the club during his
tenure.

“In the past few days we analysed our sporting
development and came to the conclusion that we wanted to venture a new
beginning.

“We thank Thomas for everything he brought to Werder Bremen
in more than 40 years of belonging to the club as a player and coach.

“The club celebrated excellent sporting success with him and
he characterised Werder, (but) after battling to avoid relegation, we were of
the collective opinion that a consensual separation was the best for the
planned new start.”

Schaaf, who will not take charge of the club’s final game of
the season against Nuremberg, also paid tribute to the club and thanked them
for the level of support he received since taking charge of the club.
