Shaqiri sets Bayern target

Switzerland international Xherdan Shaqiri says his goal is to inspire Bayern Munich to the treble next season.

The forward looked set to join Galatasaray from Basel last month, but a proposed transfer collapsed over the size of the fee involved, allowing Bayern to swoop in and agree a deal to bring Shaqiri to the Allianz Arena at the end of the season.

Shaqiri is now hoping to make a big impression in Munich, telling Sport1: “I want to win the treble with Bayern.”

Breaking into Jupp Heynckes’ starting line-up will not be easy, given he will likely be competing with Thomas Muller, Toni Kroos, Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben for an attacking berth.

However, Shaqiri is undaunted by the challenge, arguing: “No matter where you go, you have competition – and that’s just the same at Bayern.”

Shaqiri has an early opportunity to prove his talent to his new employers when Basel host Bayern in the Champions League round-of-16 first leg, which will take place at St. Jakob-Park on February 22.
