Spurs still have Champions League spot in their sights

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp believes his side still have a fighting chance to finish in the top four and secure a Champions League place.

Manchester City currently occupy fourth place in the English Premier League by some margin.

Spurs go into Saturday’s match against Blackpool in sixth place and trail City by seven points, but the Tottenham manager thinks it is still possible to catch their rivals if they win their remaining four Premier League games.

“It’s not impossible, it’s tough but it still can be done,” said Redknapp.

“We are looking to win all four games if we can.”

Redknapp’s team must first face Blackpool at White Hart Lane on Saturday. If Tottenham lose, and Manchester City beat Everton away, City will have sealed fourth place and Tottenham will be left to battle Liverpool for fifth position, and a place in the Europa League.

Although Blackpool are threatened by relegation, and 17th in the Premier League table, Redknapp believes they will still have to be wary of their attacking style.

“They create loads of chances whoever they play. They only know one way to play; they will go for it,” Redknapp explained.

“No-one has an easy game with them.”

In particular, Redknapp believes his side will have to be wary of midfielders Charlie Adam and David Vaughan.

“They have got some real quality in midfield. Vaughan and Adam are two fantastic footballers, they’ve both been excellent this year in the Premier League,” he said.

Redknapp is without defender Benoit Assou-Ekotto (hamstring), and midfielder Tom Huddlestone (ankle) for Saturday’s game, while Vedran Corluka remains a doubt since sustaining a hamstring injury against Chelsea on Saturday.

Another drawback for Tottenham is the lack of goals scored by their strikers over the course of the season, with Jermain Defoe, Peter Crouch, and Roman Pavlyuchenko contributing only 15 Premier League goals between them so far.

“It’s a one off – it’s disappointing that they haven’t scored the goals they normally score, but they are all capable of it. Next year we could be sitting here and they could have scored 40 goals between them.” Redknapp said.
