Maarten Stekelenburg was delighted with his performance during Roma’s 1-0 win over Juventus in Serie A on Saturday.
The Dutch goalkeeper had been frozen out at the Stadio Olimpico, but returned to the fold after the sacking of Zdenek Zeman, and is feeling confident enough to deal with any challenge.
“It was great to win at Juventus. After I saved a free kick from (Andrea) Pirlo and caught a few high crosses, I felt as though they would never get the ball into my goal. That’s how strong I felt,” he told De Telegraaf.
“After (Francesco) Totti scored that fantastic goal, I knew it all came together for the team and for me. We could really use this after a difficult period.
“We’re not there yet. I have to continue like this myself. I want to return to the national team.”
The former Ajax man was in talks over a move to Fulham in January, but says his desire to leave the Italian capital is now behind him.
“I feel fine again. Everything is going well at the club. After the win against Juventus our confidence is growing. The team are back on track. I feel good again,” he added.
