Suarez open to Uruguay return for World Cup

Luis Suarez would not say no if he were to be called up by Uruguay for this year’s World Cup.

Suarez scored 69 goals in 143 games for Uruguay before he called time on his international career in September 2024.

The former Barcelona forward is his nation’s record goalscorer, and he has played at four World Cups.

And should a call from Marcelo Bielsa arrive, then Suarez would be happy to play for his country again.

“Obviously, the national team is always what you want,” Suarez told Uruguayan publication Diario Ovacion.

“You start thinking about it today, turning it over in your mind, and with the World Cup near, if they need you, what do you do? I will never say no to my country, never will I say no to my country.

“I retired from the national team to make way for other players, and because I felt that a moment had arrived when I could no longer be of use to the squad. But if they need me, I will never say no to the national team.

“That is impossible, as long as I am still playing, as long as I remain active.”

Suarez has scored 32 goals in 65 MLS appearances for Inter Miami, where he has linked up with his good friend Lionel Messi.

However, the 39-year-old conceded he has lost some desire for the game since he retired from international football.

“You maintain the desire, that passion for football driven by goals and dreams, and you always dreamed of being part of the national team,” Suarez said.

Obviously, I made the decision [to retire] for various reasons, but since I left, that flame for football has dimmed a little.”

Uruguay take on Saudi Arabia, Cape Verde and Spain in their World Cup group.
