Ter Stegen hoping for understudy role

“There is no gift for any of us four (goalkeepers). Every one of us wants to be on the final list, and we are fighting with that objective in mind,” ter Stegen told Express.

Despite the security provided by Manuel Neuer, the definite starter under Loew, there is uncertainty as to who is his first-choice deputy – Hoffenheim ‘keeper Tim Wiese or former Manchester United man and Hannover ‘keeper Ron-Robert Zieler.

“We wanted to see Marc and so far he has shown he is well-prepared and knows exactly what he wants,” Andreas Kopke, goalkeeper coach for the German national team, said.

Ter Stegen, 20, is among a crop of youngsters aged under 21 who were provisionally called up by Loew, alongside Mario Goetze, Julian Draxler and Marco Reus.
