In what looks set to be a cagey encounter, Newport and Tranmere will meet on Saturday with both sides looking to secure the final spot in League One for next season.

Starting with a high-flying Newport side, despite being heavily tipped as the underdog in their semi-final trip to Mansfield last week, Michael Flynn’s side once again impressed in their penalties victory at Field Mill. Now enjoying a 12-match unbeaten run, their best run of the season, The Exiles have not tasted defeat since the 12th of March. While County have gained plenty of plaudits for their defensive stability, fans around Rodney Parade will have some minor concerns about Newport’s form in the final third. The Welsh outfit have failed to score more than a single goal in 90 minutes in 11 of their last 14 encounters.

As for the visitors, while Newport might be heading to Wembley with some real momentum, the same cannot be said about a stalling Tranmere side. Just scrapping past Forest Green with a 2-1 aggregate victory last week, Micky Mellon’s men have recorded just a single victory in their last six appearances and have registered just a pair of wins since the end of March. A huge part of Tranmere’s issues at the back end of the year has come down to their lackluster displays outside of Birkenhead. Rovers have failed to win any of their last five matches on the road and have scored just two goals in over 500 minutes of action away from Prenton Park.
