United to turn attention to Perez

Manchester United are ready to turn their attention to Benfica’s Enzo Perez after finally admitting defeat in their pursuit of Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal and Kevin Strootman of Roma, the Daily Star understands.

Manager Louis van Gaal is keen to continue strengthening his squad when the transfer window reopens and has been linked with a move for a number of midfielders, despite the club being short in defensive numbers.

Perez, like United duo Angel Di Maria and Marcos Rojo, was part of the Argentina squad that made it to the final of this summer’s World Cup finals in Brazil after an impressive campaign with Benfica which saw him score four goals in twenty-eight league appearances.

The former Estudiantes man’s form saw him earn a new four-year deal with the Portuguese club in the close season, though it is understood that he has a release clause of £23.5m within the contract.
