US groin surgery for Marveaux

Newcastle United midfielder Sylvain Marveaux will travel to America for an operation on his right hip and groin.

The French midfielder left the field during his side’s 2-1 victory over Everton earlier this month following the injury.

Newcastle said Marveaux would checkd in to the Steadman Clinic in Vail, Colorado, to be operated on by Dr Marc Philippon, described as “one of the world’s leading orthopaedic hip surgeons”.

A summer signing from Rennes, Marveaux’s start against the Toffees was his ninth appearance for Alan Pardew’s high-flying Magpies.

No return date for the 25-year-old Frenchman has been given, with the club promising an update after the operation.

Meanwhile, winger Gabriel Obertan is out of Saturday’s game against Manchester City.

But Obertan is confident he will be fit for next Saturday’s visit to his former club Manchester United.

Obertan missed the Everton game with a toe infection, and manager Alan Pardew had hoped to have him available for the City game to replace Marveaux.

But Obertan is still not 100 per cent, and won’t be involved.

“Hopefully, I’ll be back for Man United,” Obertan said.

“Coming back early against Man City wasn’t planned, but we tried to go for it.”

“I tried to play, but I don’t feel ready. It gives me four more days to be fit for Man United.”

Pardew, who will also be without Cheik Tiote, is sweating on the fitness of Leon Best, and Hatem Ben Arfa and Sammy Ameobi are vying for starts.
