Vancouver Whitecaps 3-0 Sporting Kansas City: Muller on target for Western Conference leaders

Thomas Muller got himself on the scoresheet as three first-half goals helped the Vancouver Whitecaps down lowly Sporting Kansas City 3-0 at BC Place.

Emmanuel Sabbi and Bruno Caicedo were also on target for Jesper Sorensen’s team, who pulled three points clear at the top of the Western Conference in the process.

The scoring was opened in the 13th minute by Sabbi, who capitalised on the chaos inside the Sporting KC box by prodding the ball home with the help of the crossbar.

It got even better for the Whitecaps soon after when Caicedo cut inside from the left and bent a 23rd-minute effort past John Pulskampoff that struck the right post on its way in.

And Muller put the result beyond doubt five minutes later with a header from inside the box after Sabbi had done brilliantly to keep the ball in before crossing for the German.

Vancouver then hit the woodwork twice through Sabbi and Sebastian Berhalter to conclude a rip-roaring first half, and the hosts should have increased their lead after the break.

Caicedo, Berhalter and Andres Cubas all squandered opportunities early in the second half before Muller missed the chance to double his tally with another headed attempt.

Substitute Rayan Elloumi almost added further gloss to the scoreline in stoppage time, but after being slipped in by Cheikh Sabaly, his low drive was thwarted by Pulskamp.

Data Debrief: Free-scoring Whitecaps keep on winning

After narrowly missing out on the MLS Cup against Inter Miami in 2025, Vancouver have started the new campaign in style and look to be in a good place to avenge that defeat and go one better this time around.

That is in part because of their impressive attack. The Whitecaps became only the second team in MLS history to score at least 22 goals within their first eight league games, joining the Los Angeles Galaxy side from 1998.

And key to that is the experienced Muller. Along with netting his fourth MLS goal of the season, he finished with team-high totals for chances created (three), possession won (five) and total duels (12), while only Mathias Laborda (25) played more passes in the final third than Muller’s 24.

Vancouver were worthy of their win too, registering an expected goals (xG) total of 3.06 from their 25 shots, though only six were on target, compared to Sporting KC’s 0.14 from their three attempts.
