Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger sang the praises of his team after they won 4-0 at Wigan on Saturday.

The English Premier League encounter at the DW Stadium was one-sided, with Mikel Arteta, Thomas Vermaelen, Gervinho and Robin van Persie all getting on the scoresheet.

And afterwards Wenger was clearly delighted with his side’s performance as they extended their unbeaten streak in the Premier League to seven matches, with six of them being wins.

“Maybe they started a bit stronger than us but after 10-15 minutes we took control of the game and had an outstanding, mature, collective performance and overall, we controlled the game,” Wenger told Sky Sports.

“We had many new players (at the start of the season), we had many injuries and overall we have played together now for a while and that makes the team click much better.”

“And I must praise the players. They have a fantastic mentality, good concentration, good focus and good motivation, they are intelligent.”

“There is still room for improvement but overall we have good ingredients in there.”

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez blamed poor defending for his side’s defeat.

Despite an impressive start, Arsenal were 2-0 ahead inside the opening 30 minutes after Arteta and Vermaelen scored in successive minutes and Martinez thought that was why his side lost.

“From our point of view we are disappointed,” Martinez told Sky Sports.

“I don’t think we – apart from the first 15 minutes – I don’t think we reached anywhere near our level.”

“We need to learn why and the reason is because we conceded two goals too early and we helped Arsenal massively. But they deserve huge credit in the manner in which they took advantage of that.”

“We know what we’re good at, we know how we have to play to get results and today unfortunately the two goals that we conceded were too soft, too quick and psychologically they really affected the rest of the performance.”
