West Brom 3 Hull City 2: Hosts come from behind to progress

A stunning late show from West Brom saw them fight back from behind to beat Hull City 3-2 and progress to the League Cup fourth round.

Brown Ideye opened his West Brom account with a brave effort 15 minutes in, though the Nigerian’s commitment saw him sustain an injury that forced him off soon after.

Tom Ince scored four minutes from the break to level the scores and Hull themselves went in front soon after the interval as Robbie Brady smartly tucked home after good work from Hatem Ben Arfa.

A glut of late chances for West Brom eventually saw them break through as Gareth McAuley smashed in a late leveller.

And with extra time looming, Alan Irvine’s side snatched the win less than a minute later through Saido Berahino.

Victory for the Midlands side sees them snap a run of three consecutive eliminations at the third-round stage and they will travel to Bournemouth in the next phase.

Both bosses changed their entire line-ups from the weekend’s league action. Cristian Gamboa and Sebastian Blanco made full debuts for West Brom, as well as academy graduate Liam O’Neil.

The hosts seemed to be more comfortable and quickly set about attacking Hull, Youssouf Mulumbu seeing a deflected shot squirm just wide before Ideye pounced to fire home left-footed after Steve Harper had shown sharp reflexes to deny Blanco’s header.

Georgios Samaras emerged from the bench to replace the Nigerian – who picked up a knock in scoring – and was next to go close, dinking wide after a good Mulumbu pass.

Steve Bruce’s side had showed little sign of getting back into the game but a rare moment of quality five minutes from the break saw Yannick Sagbo release Brady on the left and the Irishman’s low cross found an unmarked Ince at the back post to calmly find the net.

And they started the second half as they ended the first, Ben Arfa darting in from the right before finding Brady with a crisp throughball, which the winger controlled neatly before slotting past former Hull goalkeeper Boaz Myhill.

Blanco sent a free-kick just wide but after two long-rangers from David Meyler threatened to put the game out of West Brom’s reach, Irvine replaced the ineffective Victor Anichebe with Berahino on the hour.

West Brom swarmed forward late on, with Harper making a string of good saves before Hull’s defences were finally breached as McAuley volleyed home after a corner was not cleared.

And Berahino ensured extra time would not be required, latching onto substitute Silvestre Varela’s threaded pass to snatch a win.
