Wrapping Up Week Three of the English Premier League

Best Team Performances

The three most impressive teams in week three were: Liverpool, Manchester City, and Manchester United.

Worst Team Performances

On the other side of the spectrum, the three most disappointing sides were: Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, and Chelsea.

Top Individual Performers

Edin Dzeko put on a magnificent display versus Tottenham Hotspur. The Bosnian hitman has made most City fans forget about former captain Carlos Tevez, who lead the Premier League in goals last season. Dzeko has an English Premier League leading six goals through three games this season. Simply brilliant.

WARNING: Arsenal fans should turn away and skip this portion of the column in order to keep their sanity. Samir Nasri put in a nine out of ten performance versus the Gunners bitter North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur yesterday. He was instrumental in City’s cutting edge attacking display and has almost forced Roberto Mancini into playing him every week. Poor Wenger, he’s got the worst of yet another transfer situation.

Manchester United’s thrashing of Arsenal was highlighted by an absolutely brilliant game by forward Wayne Rooney. The 25-year-old England international netted a hat-trick against a rather amateur Arsenal back four. The Gunners were utterly terrible in the game, but Rooney’s two master-class free-kicks were still of the highest quality. United now sits at the top of the table. They have Rooney to thank for that, the Englishman has bagged five goals in just three Premier League games this season. Take a bow Wayne, take a bow.

Yet another player from Manchester has made the cut as one of the top performers of this week, and it’s Ashley Young. The England international scored two delicious goals, each of them  bending curlers that snuck into the far post beyond the stretch of Arsenal’s young Polish goalkeeper.

Manager on the hot-seat

No mystery here. Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is surely walking on thin ice after his club’s embarrassing loss at Old Trafford. The Gunners have collected just one point in three matches, but will Wenger get the axe in 2011-12? One thing is certain, he will not resign his post. After Arsenal’s loss on Sunday, Wenger said:

“I do feel it was under special circumstances.

“We had a lot of players out and we have played only five games. It is not the end of the season where you make a balance of everything.

“We collapsed physically towards the end but we had eight players out.

“We have to find the right players and if we do we will sign them. We have the money and if we find players to strengthen the team we will do it. If we don’t do it, it is because we haven’t found them.”

Manchester United’s boss Sir Alex Ferguson had nothing but positive remarks for what Wenger has done as manager of Arsenal.

“We live in a cynical world these days and the media are so cut-throat.

“It is hard to understand at times. But the job he has done for 15 years now is phenomenal.

“He has introduced a philosophy of football and a way of playing and has brought in entertaining players and has sold fantastically well. I respect that.”
