New Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani is hopeful of forging a strong partnership with Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
The Uruguay international ended intense speculation on his future by signing a five-year contract at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday.
His arrival has led to speculation that he would be a direct replacement for Swede Ibrahimovic, who is reportedly interesting Real Madrid and Manchester City.
But ex-Napoli man Cavani wants the 31-year-old to stay and help the club challenge for honours.
“I know that Ibra’s (Ibrahimovic) a world champion, it will be a pleasure to play alongside him,” he said.
“It’s very good that he’s with us. I hope to be able to form a good partnership with him.
“This project is very rich, very motivating, very ambitious. Honestly, I am a player who always wants to win. For me this is a club where many would like to play.
“PSG are among the best in the world and are one of the teams that can fight for the Champions League. That’s why I made this decision.”
PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi echoed the South American’s statements by insisting the plan is to partner the two strikers, adding that Cavani’s decision to join signals their intent to keep competing for top prizes.
“We bought Cavani to play with Zlatan, but the final decision rests with the coach,” Al-Khelaifi stated.
“The arrival of Cavani is proof of the continuity of our project. It was not easy for Cavani to come because he was a very important player in Naples.
“Our objectives do not change, we want to win the Champions League in the next four years.”
