Deschamps happy to end winless run

Marseille coach Didier Deschamps was satisfied but not overjoyed with his side’s 2-1 win over Ligue 1 rivals Bordeaux on Sunday.

The reigning French champions, who had gone winless in their last five rounds, finally broke the run against a determined Bordeaux side that clawed back a goal through Anthony Modeste’s penalty kick in the 74th minute.

But first-half strikes to Andre-Pierre Gignac and Brazilian import Brandao ensured Marseille took the points and stayed fifth, three points adrift of league leaders Lille, who have a game in hand.

“I’m satisfied because we came out with a win,” Deschamps said.

“It was difficult, though, towards the end of the match, and we should have done better in terms of controlling it, especially in the second half when we lost the ball too much.”

“Given Saturday’s results, we had to win to keep the gap the same. The road will be long and difficult. It’s a good thing for us that both our strikers scored.”

Bordeaux boss Jean Tigana felt his side should have taken a point at the Stade Velodrome.

“The result is a little harsh on us. We conceded a very sloppy second goal,” Tigana said.

“We had decided to sit back in the first half and not come out too much, and I had planned to change things round in the second.”

“Our second-half display was positive – we played and tried to bring the ball out from the back, but we needed more presence in the penalty area.”
