Diakite on Liverpool radar

Liverpool are showing interest in Lazio defender Modibo Diakite, according to Il Corriere dello Sport.

It is now clear that the Frenchman will be leaving Olimpico, having opted against signing a contract extension, but it remains to be seen whether he will see out his contract that is due to expire at the end of the season.

Lazio hope to get at least a portion of the money invested in the player by selling him in the January transfer window and are awaiting an offer from Liverpool.

Diakite rejected a proposal from Terek Grozny because he wants to move to English Premier League, and the Reds now have a chance to sign a quality defender for nominal fee.

Brendan Rodgers needs back-up for Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel, and is expected to step up his interest in the Frenchman in the coming days.

Diakite, 25, has made a total of 65 Serie A appearances for Lazio since joining the club from Pescara.
