Merseyside rivals Everton and Liverpool are set to go head-to-head in an effort to land Manchester City midfielder Michael Johnson according to the Daily Mirror.
Johnson, 20, appeared in 23 league games this season for City and emerged as one of City’s most promising talents after an impressive season at Eastlands.
The youngster drew many plaudits through such form, and reports have emerged that Liverpool and Everton have shown the keenest interest.
Johnson has been compared to Steven Gerrard in recent times due to his energetic style of play, and his ability to play in various midfield roles.
Johnson looks set to join the growing number of possible exits from Eastlands due to the turmoil created by owner Thaksin Shinawatra.
Liverpool are set to make a bid if they fail to land Aston Villa star Gareth Barry, and Everton hope to land the midfielder in order to bolster their squad for next years League and European campaign.
Manchester City are believed to have valued the player at £10, according to the Daily Mirror however, Everton and Liverpool are only set to bid £8m.
Both clubs will be hoping that a compromise can be made for the midfielder, and any funds are most likely to help provide for the signings of Jo or Andrei Arshavin.
