Lampard blunder referee goes home

Four referees who found themselves at the centre of embarrassing World Cup blunders left for home on Tuesday after failing to make the shortlist for the remainder of the tournament.

Uruguay’s Jorge Larrionda, the man who missed Frank Lampard’s ‘goal’ in England’s 4-1 defeat to Germany, is on the hit-list.

Italian official Roberto Rosetti, who allowed Carlos Tevez’s header to stand despite the Argentinian striker being offside against Mexico, is also heading home.

France’s Stephane Lannoy and Koman Coulibaly of Mali also missed out on the list of 19 referees released by FIFA to officiate from the quarter-finals onwards.

Lannoy missed the double handball of Brazil striker Luis Fabiano in the build-up to his goal against Ivory Coast while Coulibaly disallowed Maurice Edu’s late strike which would have given the USA a 3-2 win over Slovenia.

Referees retained:

Rashan Irmatov (UZB), Yuichi Nishimura (JPN), Khalil Al Ghamdi (KSA), Jerome Damon (RSA), Eddy Maillet (SEY), Carlos Alberto Batres (GUA), Marco Rodriguez (MEX), Benito Archundia (MEX), Carlos Simon (BRA), Hector Baldassi (ARG), Oscar Ruiz (COL), Pablo Pozzo (CHI), Michael Hester (NZL), Viktor Kassai (HUN), Olegario Benquerenca (POR), Howard Webb (ENG), Wolfgang Stark (GER), Alberto Undiano (ESP), Franck De Bleeckere (BEL)

  6. Michael says:

I think this world cup is not a good experience for its referees. Three referees are the only exception to this, they are Webb of England, Al Ghamdi of Saudi Arabia, and Irmatov of Uzbakistan. One of them will be for the final i’m very positive.

  10. Khalil Al Ghamdi deserves to be an arbitrator from among the remaining 19 judgments in the World Cup .. I hope to be judged the final match of the darker capable of doing so

  12. QHRNY says:

without doubt khalil Jalal is one of the best referees in the WC and I wish to see him in the final match that will be between Brazil and Argintina :)

  13. Commentator says:

Looks like Asian referees are becoming more popular. I believe the referee of the world cup final will be determined based on who are the two teams that will meet on the final. If one team is from Europe and one team is from south america, which is what most people expect, the chances that the referee will be from these two continents are slim. The referee has to be from a different continent+ excellent reputation and performance. Therefore I think the referee will be either from Asia or Africa. Maybe Al ghamdi of Saudi Arabia or Damon of South Africa are the two ideal referees for the final.

  14. Perlo says:

Howard Webb (ENG), or Khalil Al ghamdi (KSA) for the final of the world cup.

  15. uwemakangson says:

FIFa should punish referees who mess up matches with bad calls apart from just dropping them from competitions. Take for instance the referee who officiated in the Chelsea vs Barcelona match 2 seasons ago at the champions league match. I think his name was Ovrebo or something like that. His bias and poor officiating cost Chelsea the match and nothing was done to the referee. That was a shame and fifa should have apologized to Chelsea just like they apologized to England. it is a rule that when a player takes off his shirt he is issued a yellow card but no card was issued to Inesta after he removed his shirt on scoring against Chelsea.

I really like Roberto Rosetti, and i hate everything about Italy that relates to soccer/football. Too bad he did not catch the offsides.

  17. Brad says:

what about the dunces who failed on the USA goals? Against Slovenia (Edu’s goal) and Algeria (Dempsey “offside” goal).

  18. Johnny Retardo says:

Benito Archundia is scum. The single worst official in FIFA’s Referee Stable. He is a biased and racist official and hold a massive grudge against Canada. He is everything wrong with Officiating, not just in FIFA but in all sport. Funny how the guy is a lawyer too.

  19. Chelsea FC Fan says:

    I must say…

Watching Chelsea get robbed by Ovrebo made me scream for my life that the game needed more help to officiate it…

But, now that i’ve been watching the world cup, I have a different point of view…I’m not a big world cup fan – I don’t have a personal favorite, but I enjoy watching the competition. So, as a neutral viewer, i’ve come to appreciate the aspect of human error in the game…it does create controversy, and it does chip away at the team/fan morale, but at the same time, it is very entertaining and it encourages teams to be on top of their game – you have to go out and dominate and win with the utmost certainty…you can’t just play for that one goal and hope that you maintain it – go out and smash teams and give the fans what they’ve come to see…that’s obviously way more difficult to do than it sounds, but it’s something to strive for…you can’t leave the game in the ref’s hands and expect them to see it like you do…I do like how FIFA is reviewing the officials now and sending them packing when they are deemed incompetent – it’s not the refs fault cuz they were chosen by someone to officiate…maybe someone knew they were incompetent and should be held accountable for their choice, but that’s just speculation and probably not a realistic approach…

So, Ovrebo, after a year of suffering, i’ve finally come to terms with what you’ve done to my Chelsea and I think you did the best you could, given the situation, and i’m not mad anymore…

CFC Fan, you lost me at “the game needed more help to officiate it. .. “
