Harry Redknapp is confident that a month of frantic transfer market activity has left Tottenham better equipped for the battle for survival in the Premier League.

Redknapp’s desire to strengthen his squad saw Spurs outspend even super-rich Manchester City in the January transfer window.

Strikers Jermain Defoe and Robbie Keane and defender Pascal Chimbonda were all brought back to the club and Redknapp also splashed out 14 million pounds on Honduran midfielder Wilson Palacios and acquired Carlo Cudicini from Chelsea on a free transfer.

Redknapp’s satisfaction was mitigated by the loss of Defoe for up to ten weeks with a stress fracture to his right foot but he believes the deadline-day return of Keane from Liverpool will offset that setback.

“Jermain is a blow to us – he started well (since returning from Portsmouth) and got three goals,” Redknapp said.

“He was sure to score plenty more before the end of the season so we needed to get someone in and in Robbie we couldn’t have got anyone better.

“People make decisions in their life and his move to Liverpool didn’t work out.

“But we’re pleased to have him back. The chairman (Daniel Levy) worked hard to keep him in the first place and to bring him back.

“It was difficult for Robbie. Liverpool are such a strong side going well in the league it was hard for him to break in regularly.

“We’re delighted he’s here – and it’s the same with Cudicini and Palacios. They are good signings and I’m very pleased with the work we’ve done.”

Cudicini, Palacios, Chimbonda and Keane could all feature in Tottenham’s north London derby with Arsenal on Sunday.

With Spurs just one point above the relegation zone it is set to be a particularly charged encounter and Ireland captain Keane admits he is desperate to make an impact after a confidence-sapping time at Liverpool.

The striker was deemed surplus to requirements by Reds boss Rafael Benitez, who claimed the decision to sign the striker was not his.

Keane had been desperate to join Liverpool, the club he supported as a boy, but the move turned sour as he appeared to be caught in the crossfire generated by Benitez’s confict with the club’s owners and chief executive over control of transfer policy.

“It proved not to be the right move for me,” Keane acknowledged after returning to Spurs on a four-year contract. “I know some Spurs fans will feel I let them down by leaving but I can assure them I shall be giving my all for this club.

“We’ve got to get on and fight our way up that league table.”

During his first Spurs spell, Keane scored 107 goals in 254 appearances after joining from Leeds in 2002 for seven million pounds.
