Fenerbahce’s Spanish international striker Daniel Guiza said Monday he believes his compatriot Luis Aragones will stay put as coach of the Turkish side despite its poor start to the season.
“After six matches without a win it is normal that a coach is affected but Luis’ motto is to continue working day by day and seeing if we can move things forward,” the 28-year-old told Spanish media.
“I believe and hope that his days are not numbered. We can win our next match and lift our heads,” he added.
Aragones, who led Spain to the 2008 European Championship title, has come under fire from Fenerbahce supporters after the club suffered a 4-1 defeat to Kayserispor over the weekend.
The Istanbul-based club are now in 12th place in the Turkish Super League.
The 70-year-old coach signed a two-year contract with Fenerbahce in July in a deal worth three million euros but Spanish sports daily Marca has reported that he can break it without paying a penalty.
He told reporters after the latest Turkish league match that he had no plans to quit.
Guiza, the Spanish league’s top scorer last season who signed with Fenerbahce from Mallorca shortly after Aragones, said he would stay at the Turkish side even if the Spanish coach were to leave.
“It is a shame that things are not going well for us but I don’t regret having signed with this club because I am enjoying myself and the fans want me here,” he said. “I signed for four years and I have to fulfill that.”
