17th June: Wednesday’s Football Accumulator – 8/1

With the remainder of Europe’s top tiers set to make their return to action this week, Wednesday offers us a string of eye-catching contests from across the continent. On that note, we here at Soccer News have searched far and wide to find you a few helpful tips that are worth keeping an eye out for in midweek.

Wednesday 17th June

BST 17:30 Eintracht Frankfurt vs Schalke

Starting with Wednesday’s hosts, making an empathic return to winning ways last weekend and grabbing a thumping 4-1 win away at a high-flying Hertha Berlin, Eintracht Frankfurt have made a string of improvements since returning from the enforced break. Despite crashing out of the DFP Pokal at the hands of champions-elect Bayer Munich earlier in the month, Adi Hutter’s men have won three of their last four Bundesliga appearances and have suddenly found a route into the top half. Really starting to shine in the final third, there is no doubt that the former RB Salzburg boss will be hugely excited by Andre Silva’s stunning run of form. Including stealing the show away in Berlin last weekend and grabbing a brace, the AC Milan loanee is enjoying his brightest spell at the Commerzbank-Arena. The only player in Hutter’s camp to reach double digits so far this season, Silva has now recorded six top-flight goals in his seven matchups since returning from the enforced break. With Schalke still in the midst of what has been an extended blip, Frankfurt’s leading man should be confident of extending on his tally in midweek. Despite picking up a point against top-four chasers Bayer Leverkusen over the weekend, the pressure still remains on David Wagner’s position at the Veltins Arena. Freefalling away from the European spots, the former Huddersfield boss has seen his side fail to land a single Bundesliga victory since the 17th of January, a 13-match baron run. Winless on the road since opening 2020 and hit with a 3-0 drumming the last time they made the trip to Frankfurt, the Blues should be in for another tough test on Wednesday.

Tip: Andre Silva to score anytime @ 13/10

18:00 Aston Villa vs Sheffield United

With the Premier League making its return to action on Wednesday evening, Sheffield United will simply have their sights set on starting off where they finished back in March. Continuing to shock almost everyone across England after what has been a stellar top-flight run, Chris Wilders’ men still have a stunning European finish at the top of their agenda. Last seen picking up a 1-0 win over rock-bottom Norwich prior to the enforced break, the Blades found themselves in the midst of a six-match unbeaten run across all competitions, winning five of those appearances. More impressive, also with an FA Cup quarter-final against Arsenal on the horizon, Wednesday’s guests have continued to gain a long list of admirers for their performances at the back. Including picking up a 1-0 win away at Crystal Palace back on February 1st, only champions-elect Liverpool hold a better defensive tally than the Blades. Knowing that three points on their return could see them briefly break into the top-six, the mood in Sheffield United’s camp should be at a high as they travel to Villa Park. On the flip side, entering the break with what was a 4-0 drumming away at the King Power, Dean Smith’s hosts find themselves in the midst of a real struggle since marking their Premier League return. Sat two points adrift of safety and losing each of their last five consecutive matchups before the interruption, it should also be noted that Villa hold the worst defensive record in the top-flight. With the Blades picking up a 2-0 win when the two sides faced off earlier in the season, we’re backing a similar outcome on Wednesday evening.

Tip: Sheffield United win @ 5/4

21:00 Osasuna vs Atletico Madrid

Starting with Wednesday’s guests, marking their return from the enforced break with a 1-1 draw away at Athletic Bilbao, Los Colchoneros are a side now in an uphill battle to secure another top-four finish. Still sat one point adrift of breaking back into the Champions League spots, Atletico Madrid have now played out a stalemate in their last three La Liga appearances on the bounce. However, coming past defending European champions Liverpool at Anfield in the most dramatic of fashion to book their spot in the semi-final of this year’s Champions League, Diego Simeone’s men should see their trip to the Estadio El Sadar as a golden opportunity to make a return to winning ways in midweek. Glad to see former Chelsea striker Diego Costa end his baron run last weekend, Atletico picked up a 2-0 win when the two sides faced off back in December and they have now won each of their last three meetings against the midweek hosts, recording clean sheets in each of those victories. More impressive, the European contenders have won seven of their previous eight meetings against Osasuna. Throwing away the lead against Real Sociedad on their return last weekend, Los Rojillos have now won just two of their last eight matchups either side of the break and have continued to show some real issues on home soil. Including a woeful 3-0 drumming against Getafe prior to the break, Head Coach Jagoba Arrasate has seen his men once again win just a pair of their last eight contests at the Estadio El Sadar. While Atletico might not have been at their best this year, we’re backing an away victory for Simeone’s side on Wednesday.

Tip: Atletico Madrid win @ 4/5
