29th February: Saturday’s Football Accumulator – 6/1

With a busy Saturday afternoon from across England’s footballing tiers, we here at Soccer News have found a handful of helpful tips that can boost your weekend acca:

Saturday 29th February

BST 15:00 Gillingham vs AFC Wimbledon

Starting with Saturday’s hosts, while Gillingham may have been disappointed to have only collected a point away at Lincoln last weekend, Steve Evans’ side are enjoying an extended purple patch. Knowing that three points this weekend would see them move within touching distance of the play-off positions, fans around Kent have seen their side win three of their last four League One appearances and the Gills are in the midst of a third-tier unbeaten run that stems back to the 2nd of November. Along with continuing to shine at the Priestfield Stadium and yet to taste defeat in front of their own supporters over the past four months, there is no doubt that the former Rotherham boss will be most impressed by his side’s continued performances at the back. Recording back-to-back clean sheets, Gillingham have conceded just 30 League One strikes this season, the second-best defensive record in the division. With the mood in Evans’ camp at a continued high and with a real opportunity to extend on their stellar run this weekend, the Gills should be relishing AFC Wimbledon’s arrival on Saturday afternoon. Playing out what turned out to be a lackluster 0-0 draw against fellow strugglers Blackpool last time out, Glyn Hodges’ side have failed to win any of their last seven matches across all competitions and they still sit firmly at the heart of a relegation battle. Also losing three of their last four trips outside of Surrey, we’re backing a home victory this weekend.

Tip: Gillingham win and over 1.5 goals @ 1/1

15:00 Tranmere Rovers vs Fleetwood Town

From one League One high-flyer to another, putting in an eye-catching display at Sunderland in midweek and extending on their recent resurge, Fleetwood suddenly find themselves really in the mix to land a play-off finish this season. Opening the weekend with only their goal-difference keeping them outside of the top-six, Joey Barton’s men have now won five of their last six appearances and are in the midst of an unbeaten run that stems all the way back to the 11th of January. With the mood in their camp on the rise, the Reds have collected victories over the likes of fellow promotion hopefuls Portsmouth, Peterborough, and Wycombe over the past month. Led by leading marksman Paddy Madden who has bagged 16 goals so far this season, there is no doubt that Barton will be impressed by his side’s recent displays on the road. Along with picking up a point at the Riverside on Tuesday night, Fleetwood also landed back-to-back wins over Wycombe and AFC Wimbledon earlier in the month. Losing just a sole matchup on the road since opening the New Year, Saturday’s guests should travel to Prenton Park confident of extending on their recent run. While Tranmere may have managed to snatch the most dramatic of 3-2 victories off of Shrewsbury in midweek, the Rovers still find themselves in the midst of a real crisis. Still sat five points adrift of League One safety and dealing with a string of off-field issues earlier in the year, Micky Mellon’s men have lost six of their last eight matches across all competitions and have landed just a sole third-tier win since the 21st of December.

Tip: Fleetwood Town win @ 17/20

15:00 Grimsby Town vs Northampton Town

Starting with Saturday’s hosts, putting in what was another rampant display in midweek and picking up a thumping 4-2 win over Newport, few in League Two would have expected Grimsby’s resurge under new boss Ian Holloway. Aside from a defeat away at league leaders Swindon last weekend, the Mariners have won their other three fourth-tier appearances and that was their sole defeat in their last seven outings. Skyrocketing away from the drop zone and now looking to secure what would be a remarkable top half charge, there is no doubt that the former Premier League boss will be most impressed by his side’s continued performances on home soil. Including 3-1 and 2-1 victories over Stevenage and Morecambe, Grimsby are unbeaten in their last four matchups at Blundell Park, recording three wins. Also scoring at least a pair of strikes on their unbeaten run in North East Lincolnshire, one man to keep an eye out for on Saturday could be leading marksman, James Hanson. Once again finding the net against Newport on Tuesday, the 32-year-old has found the net in each of his last three matches on the bounce. With the mood in their camp at a season-high, Holloway’s men should be confident of causing an upset this weekend. Crashing back to losing ways in midweek thanks to a 2-1 defeat at Cheltenham, Northampton have continued on what has been a woeful run of form. Now only just hanging onto their spot in the play-offs thanks to their goal difference, Saturday’s guests have lost five of their last six matches across all competitions and even more worrying for the Midlands outfit, they have lost each of their last three consecutive trips away from the PTS Academy Stadium.
