AC Milan 2-3 Atalanta: Visitors hold off late fightback to dent Allegri´s top-four hopes

Atalanta dealt a huge blow to AC Milan’s top-four hopes in Serie A as they ran out 3-2 winners at San Siro.

Ederson, Davide Zappacosta and Giacomo Raspadori were all on target, though they had to survive a late Milan fightback, with Massimiliano Allegri’s side only fourth due to their superior head-to-head record against Roma.

Adrien Rabiot’s driven shot skimmed the outside of the left post, but Atalanta soon stunned the hosts in the seventh minute. Raspadori’s shot was blocked, but Ederson drilled the rebound home, despite having three defenders closing him down.

Nikola Krstovic and Nicola Zalewski both tested Mike Maignan as Atalanta continued to turn the screw, but the goalkeeper was helpless 29 minutes in as Zappacosta rounded his marker to fire across goal and in.

That spurred Milan into life, with Santiago Gimenez, Rafael Leao and Alexis Saelemaekers all denied by Carnesecchi before the break.

But Atalanta struck again in the 51st minute; they won the ball back high upfield, and Ederson, afforded too much space, picked out Raspadori for a powerful finish.

Christopher Nkunku twice went close, while Niklas Fullkrug saw a swept finish ruled out for offside as Milan attempted a late fightback. Strahinja Pavlovic started it, nodding Samuele Ricci’s free-kick across goal and in after 88 minutes.

Nkunku was then felled by Marten de Roon and subsequently powered in the resulting penalty after 94 minutes, but Fullkrug flicked a late header wide, and Milan had left it too late to salvage a point.

Data Debrief: How costly could this run be?

Milan have now failed to win their last three Serie A matches (D1 L2), their longest run since a run of three between February and March last year.

The Rossoneri have also now failed to win any of their last six league matches against Atalanta (D2 L4), with this their second consecutive home defeat to La Dea.

There will be frustration for Allegri, though, as he saw his side register 1.94 expected goals (xG) – a total inflated by Nkunku’s late penalty – from 20 shots, with nine of those on target.

Atalanta, by comparison, racked up just nine attempts worth 1.08 xG, with five of those on target, as they put in a clinical performance.
