Ghana have sacked head coach Otto Addo just 72 days before they begin their World Cup campaign, following a friendly defeat to Germany.

Ghana suffered a 2-1 defeat to Julian Nagelsmann’s team in Stuttgart, with Deniz Undav scoring a late winner after Abdul Fatawu had cancelled out Kai Havertz’s opener.

It was a result that followed a 5-1 thrashing at the hands of Austria three days earlier, and they have now lost their last four matches, all friendlies.

Ghana also failed to qualify for the recent Africa Cup of Nations under Addo, but topped their World Cup qualification group, losing just one of their 10 matches (W8 D1).

“The Ghana Football Association (GFA) have parted ways with the head coach of the senior men’s national team (Black Stars), Otto Addo, effective immediately,” Ghana said in a statement on their website.

No further details on a replacement for Addo, or the reasons for his termination, have been given at this stage.

Addo was on his second stint in charge of Ghana, having previously taken interim charge in 2022, including for the World Cup, where they were knocked out at the group stage.

Ghana will be playing at the World Cup finals for the fifth time, and have been drawn in Group L alongside Croatia, England and Panama, with their first match coming against the latter on June 17.
