In what is a heavyweight Premier Division showdown on Friday night, Shamrock Rovers will travel to Oriel Park when they meet Dundalk.
Starting with the hosts, although Dundalk might have enjoyed a sensational run of form on either side of opening April, Ciaran Kilduff’s side have come crashing back down to earth in a worrying fashion. Last seen putting in another concerning display as they slumped to a deserved 3-1 defeat at home against Bohemians, the Lilywhites have come tumbling down the Premier Division standings and they have sacrificed their spot in the European spots. Likewise, getting May underway with a 2-1 loss at the hands of Shelbourne, the former top-flight champions have now put just a single point on the board from any of their previous four consecutive Premier Division appearances. Likewise, landing just a sole win since the start of April, Dundalk have also showed some concerning defensive issues. Including a thrilling 3-3 stalemate away at Waterford earlier in the month, Friday’s hosts have shipped 10 goals on their four-match winless rut. It should also be highlighted, Kilduff’s camp have mustered just a single clean sheet from any of their last nine straight attempts – a run that stems all the way back to March 16th.
As for the visitors, reclaiming their Premier Division crown last season, it is no secret that Shamrock are once again pencilled in as a landslide title contender this time around. Last seen securing a routine 3-1 victory away at Galway, Stephen Bradley’s side are leading the chase at the top of the table and they will simply be looking to make another domestic statement here. Enjoying yet another top-flight purple patch, the Rovers have won six of their previous seven Premier Division appearances – a run that stems back to a 1-1 stalemate against Waterford on April 3rd. Likewise, with their stellar run highlighted by a 4-1 romp at home against Drogheda earlier in the month, Shamrock have also won their last three straight outings by an aggregate score of 8-2. The reigning Irish champions have also gained a fearsome reputation for their free-scoring performances in the final third. In fact, including a rollercoaster 3-2 victory against Shelbourne on April 6th, Bradley’s side have notched 27 goals in their 16 Premier Division matchups this season and they should be smelling a real opportunity here.
