Anorthosis Famagusta clinched their 13th league title on Saturday night without kicking a ball after rivals APOEL FC lost 1-0 against AEK Larnaca.

The result meant that Temuri Ketsbaia’s undefeated side – who were already eleven points ahead of APOEL – were crowned champions despite having three games to play in the end-of-season play-offs. On Sunday, Anorthosis celebrated their triumph in front of around 10,500 home supporters at the Antonis Papadopoulos Stadium in Larnaca despite being held to a 0-0 draw by third-placed AC Omonia.

The visitors had missed a glorious chance to break Anorthosis’ unbeaten record when the referee awarded them a penalty in the third minute of added time only for Portuguese striker Bernardo Vasconcelos to drive his effort off the woodwork. As it is, Anorthosis’s only defeat since last summer came as they went down 6-1 to Tottenham Hotspur FC in a UEFA Cup game in London.
