Handed a real chance to break into the European spots on Friday night, Athletic Bilbao will welcome Celta Vigo to the San Mamés Barria when opening this weekend.

Starting with the hosts, after really struggling to find their form when opening the 2020/2021 campaign, Athletic Bilabo will be desperate to open December with three points on home soil. Throwing away the lead late on and having to settle for a point against Getafe last weekend, Gaizka Garitano’s men will be extremely glad to make a return to the San Mamés Barria. Knowing that victory on Friday would see them briefly climb into the European spots, Bilbao have continued to impress on home soil and have a real reputation for their rugged displays in the Basque Country. Including what was a thumping performance in their 4-0 romp against Real Betis a fortnight ago, Friday’s hosts have won each of their last three straight La Liga showdowns on home soil, a run highlighted by a 2-1 win against Sevilla.

As for the visitors, while Celta Vigo might have managed to pick up a 3-1 win against Granada on home soil last time out, it doesn’t cover what has been another worrying La Liga run for Célticos. Just about managing to hold onto their top-flight status last season, the Light Blues still find themselves opening Friday’s fixtures with their goal difference keeping them in the drop zone. With their victory last weekend just their first win in any of their other eight La Liga showdowns, Head Coach Eduardo Coudet has seen his side only continue to struggle on their travels. Including a 4-2 drumming at the hands of Sevilla in their last matchup away from the Balaídos, Celta Vigo have remarkably managed to win just one of their last 18 away day contests continuing on from last season.
