Avoiding relegation would be bigger than Conference League win for West Ham, says Bowen

Jarrod Bowen believes avoiding relegation this season would be more important for West Ham than their 2023 Conference League triumph.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s team are two points clear of bitter rivals Tottenham, who occupy the final place in the Premier League’s bottom three, with four games remaining.

That is after a stoppage-time strike from Callum Wilson guided the Hammers to a massive 2-1 victory over Everton at the London Stadium on Saturday.

That result kept Spurs rooted in the danger zone even after they earned their first Premier League win of 2026 at Wolves, and the Opta supercomputer assigns Roberto De Zerbi’s team a 59% chance of playing Championship football next campaign.

And even after leading West Ham to a European trophy three years ago, Bowen believes staying up would be his biggest accomplishment with the club.

“I think it would because of the circumstances, the season it’s been the pressure that being captain brings,” Bowen told The Athletic after Saturday’s victory.

“Being captain is a massive honour but the situation that we’re in, it falls on your head and rightly so. I’ve been here a long time and people look at me for answers.

“I’m trying to bring my A-game week in, week out. Has it always been like that every week? No, but I’m not going to give up on this club, or on my team-mates.

“If I can help the team with goals and assists, I’ll do that. If not, three points is the most important thing.

“We’ve got good players here that have stepped up in really important moments.

“When I’m not going to play as well as I’d like, which can happen, it’s important that everyone else around you steps up. We’ve had goals and assists from different people, which is important.”

Bowen has scored eight goals and provided 10 assists in 34 Premier League appearances this season, with both figures being the most of any West Ham player.

West Ham’s final four games of the season are away to Brentford, at home to Arsenal, away to Newcastle United and at home to Leeds United.
