Holders Bayern Munich will face Manchester United in the pick of the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals following Friday’s draw in Nyon.

In a repeat of the 1999 final – when United scored twice in stoppage time to win 2-1 at Camp Nou – Bayern will be hoping to progress as the German champions bid to become the first team to win back-to-back Champions League titles.

Since that famous night in Barcelona, it is Bayern who have had the better of the six subsequent meetings, with three wins to United’s one.

Pep Guardiola’s men will now have to overcome their second English opponents in as many rounds after disposing of Arsenal in the last 16, while United will need to up their game after requiring a 3-0 second-leg win to get past Olympiacos of Greece 3-2 on aggregate.

Barcelona, Guardiola’s former club, will meet Spanish rivals Atletico Madrid – contesting their first quarter-finals since 1997 – in the last eight.

The two sides are heavily involved in the La Liga title race, but have never met in European competition and all three domestic meetings this season have ended all square.

Real Madrid will seek revenge against 2012-13 runners-up Borussia Dortmund, who knocked the most successful team in the competition’s history out at the semi-final stage last year.

In the remaining quarter-final tie, Paris Saint-Germain meet Chelsea in search of a first win over the English club.

The first legs will take place on April 1-2, with the return games one week later.
