Portuguese newspaper A Bola suggests that Benfica have started the search for a new central midfielder.

The Primeira Liga leaders have been somewhat short of options in the centre of the park since Javi Garcia was sold to Manchester City in the summer.

Even if talented Andre Gomes has shown a lot of promise this season, boss Jorge Jesus is looking to sign another quality midfielder in January.

An ideal candidate would be under the age of 25 and able to cover more than one position in the three-man midfield.

Benfica have already started identifying targets, but they will wait to see how the team fare in the Champions League group stages before intensifying their search.

While leading the race in Portuguese Primeira Liga, the Eagles are in a difficult position in the Champions League, having taken just one point from first three games.

Benfica are currently three points behind second-placed Celtic, a team they will host on 20th November at Estadio da Luz.
