Besiktas cancel Walker-Peters transfer after medical delayed

Besiktas have withdrawn an offer to sign former Southampton right-back Kyle Walker-Peters after he asked to delay his medical with the Istanbul club.

Walker-Peters left Southampton as a free agent when his contract expired in June, having spent five and a half years at St Mary’s.

He initially joined on loan from Tottenham in January 2020 before making his move permanent for £12m that August.

He played 202 games for the club across all competitions – more than any other Southampton player since he made his Premier League debut in February 2020.

Walker-Peters started 35 Premier League games last season but was part of a team that amassed just 12 points, almost matching Derby County’s record for the fewest points in a season (11 in 2007-08) and being relegated with seven games remaining – a new Premier League record.

Several Premier League clubs had been tipped to move for Walker-Peters – who won two senior England caps in 2022 – but Besiktas struck an agreement to sign him.

However, the Turkish Super Lig side have now claimed that due to Walker-Peters delaying his arrival in Istanbul, they have withdrawn their interest.

A club statement read: “It is public knowledge that the arrival of professional football player Kyle Walker-Peters, who we had previously announced had reached an agreement in principle and been invited to Istanbul for a medical check-up, has been postponed.

“Kyle Walker-Peters has once again requested additional time in his notice to us today.

“Thereupon, our club gave up the transfer of the player in question. Our club continues its transfer activities in line with the policy it has determined.”

Besiktas have also been linked with a move for Portugal full-back Nelson Semedo, who is a free agent after his contract with Wolves expired last month.
