In a contest that could see a string of chances on Friday night, Celta Vigo will welcome Villarreal to the Abanca-Balaídos this week.

Starting with the hosts, after getting hit with what was a stunning defeat away at lower-league Ibiza in the Copa del Rey earlier in the week, there is no doubt that Celta Vigo will be seeking a real response. Eventually hit with what turned out to be a 5-2 drumming on their travels, Célticos have shown some signs of a struggle either side of Spain’s festive break. Marking their return to La Liga duties with a routine 2-0 defeat against defending champions Real Madrid, a 2-1 win against rock-bottom Huesca is their only victory in each of their last four appearances across all formats. However, looking to cause what would be a mild upset, there is no doubt that Celta will be glad to make a return to home soil on Friday night. Winning each of their last four straight matchups at the Abanca-Balaídos, it should be noted that they have bagged themselves at least a pair of goals in all of those four wins.

As for the visitors, while Celta might have came crashing out of the Copa del Rey earlier in the week, Villarreal managed to make a far more routine performance. Cruising their way past lower-league Zamora, despite making a string of changes, the Yellow Submarine landed a 4-1 win on the road and they have largely impressed many across Europe this season. While former Arsenal boss Unai Emery might have seen his side’s remarkable run of form come to an abrupt end after returning from the festive break, Villarreal have lost just one of their last 14 La Liga matchups, a run that stems back to September 27th. With a Champions League return at the top of their agenda, it should also be noted that Friday’s guests picked up maximum points the last time they made the trip to the Abanca-Balaídos. With chances expected at both ends of the pitch this week, we’re backing a lively showdown in Galicia.
