In a battle between two sides vying for an AFC Champions League spot this season, Melbourne will welcome Western United to AAMI Park on Friday morning.

Starting with the hosts, while Melbourne might currently find themselves sat in that lucrative second spot, it has been a worrying end to the year for the former champions. Coming off the back of a 2-1 defeat away at runaway league leaders Sydney last week, the Sky Blues have lost three of their last four contests and are only just hanging onto their top-two status. Now hit with back-to-back 2-1 defeats, including watching Victory grab Melbourne bragging rights last month, Head Coach Erick Mombaerts finds his side dealing with some worrying issues at the back. Shipping at least a pair in each of their previous defeats, Friday’s hosts have also recorded just a single clean sheet since the opening weekend.

As for the visitors, hit with a thumping 3-1 defeat at home against Wellington last weekend, the A-League latest outfit find themselves enduring their own inconsistent patch. While a shock victory at AAMI Park would see them leapfrog Melbourne, Mark Rudan’s men have recorded just a pair of victories since the 9th of November and they too are dealing with some rather glaring issues at the back. Along with the Phoenix bagging a trio of strikes last time out, Friday’s guests have also recorded just a pair of clean sheets since opening the new campaign and we’re backing another lively encounter on Friday morning.
