With a spot in the semi-final of this year’s Coppa Italia up for grabs on Thursday night, Napoli will host Spezia from behind closed doors.

Starting with the hosts, while Napoli might have hoped that they had managed to turn a real corner with their three wins on the bounce earlier in the month, Gli Azzurri have only continued to show a host of glaring inconsistencies. Putting in a torrid display over the weekend and throwing away the lead in worrying fashion, Gennaro Gattuso’s men were hit with a 3-1 drumming away at Verona and the pressure certainly appears to be piling on the one-time AC Milan boss. Now coming off the back of back-to-back defeats since that stunning 6-0 romp against Fiorentina 11 days ago, Napoli know they must make some drastic improvements at the back. Shipping five goals in their back-to-back defeats, it should also be highlighted that the midweek hosts have recorded just a single clean sheet since back on December 5th.

As for the visitors, while Spezia might have seen their remarkable purple patch come to a dramatic end last weekend, the mood in their camp should still be at a high. Despite eventually falling to what was the most action-packed of 4-3 defeats against Roma last time out, the Serie A returners caused a string of problems on the road and have impressed many across Italy this year. Really laying down a marker as they clinched a famous 3-0 romp against Roma when they faced off against the Italian giants on Coppa Italia duties earlier in the month, the Little Eagles have lost just one of their last five matchups across all competitions. With their recent run highlighted by a shock 2-1 victory away at Napoli on top-flight duties back on January 6th, we’re backing another lively meeting on Thursday night.
