Two sides who turn their attention back to Copa del Rey duties in midweek, Real Betis will host Athletic Bilbao from behind closed doors on Thursday night.

Starting with the hosts, while they might have left it late at home against Osasuna over the weekend, Real Betis grabbed a late win and the mood in their camp should be at a real high. With Borja Iglesias bagging himself three goals in back-to-back La Liga outings, there is no doubt that Los Verdiblancos have a European finish at the top of their agenda. Managing to extend their Copa del Rey adventure thanks to a thumping 3-1 victory against Real Sociedad last month, former West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini has gained plenty of plaudits since joining Betis last year. Unbeaten in all eight of their matchups across all formats since opening 2021, it should also be highlighted that Verderones are enjoying a three-match winning run at the Estadio Benito Villamarín.

As for the visitors, while Athletic Bilbao might have put in a spirited display away at the Nou Camp over the weekend, the Lions saw their eye-catching run come to an abrupt end. Eventually hit with a late 2-1 defeat against Barcelona on their travels, Head Coach Marcelino should at least take some solace from his side’s impressive start to the New Year. Lifting the Super Cup in the most dramatic of fashion against Ronald Koeman’s European giants, Bilbao have also collected victories over the likes of Real Madrid and Getafe since returning from the festive break. In a midweek showdown between two sides who find the moods in their camp at a high, it should also be noted that Bilbao put four past Betis when the two sides last faced off back in November.
