Chelsea midfielder returns to the national team

Ghana Football Association have confirmed Michael Essien will return to the Black Stars squad for the African Cup of Nations qualifier against DR Congo in March.

The Chelsea midfielder pulled out of the national team after the World Cup as he wanted more time to concentrate on his club career and recover from the knee injury that prevented him from taking part at the World Cup.

Meanwhile, Essien has fully recovered and rediscovered his form for Chelsea, and that was probably one of the reasons why he has made himself available for the future international actions.

“Essien never said he will not play for Ghana again,” GFA president Kwesi Nyantakyi said.

“He merely asked for time away from the team but has now told us he will be available in March.”
