Fergie wanted Gundogan

According to a recent Rene Meulensteen interview, Sir Alex Ferguson was interested in bringing Ilkay Gundogan to Old Trafford back in 2013. The legendary Scot was able to manage some of the best players in world football throughout the course of his illustrious career, and as it turns out, he was hoping to add one or two more to his ranks before hanging up his managerial chewing gum for good.

Gundogan, 27, was with Borussia Dortmund at the time, and this was three years before he eventually made the jump over to United’s local rivals Manchester City. The German midfielder was seen as the next incarnation of Paul Scholes, which is arguably one of the highest forms of praise he could’ve received.

While the trajectory of both clubs likely wouldn’t have changed all too much, it’s interesting to think about what exactly would’ve happened if Gundogan ended up being signed before Ferguson went off into the sunset.
