Ferguson out for season

Barry Ferguson may have played his last game for Rangers after being ruled out for the rest of this season with a torn calf muscle.

The 31-year-old midfielder suffered the injury less than two minutes into a reserves match against Hearts on Tuesday which was his first appearance for the club since he was stripped of the captaincy and suspended for two weeks in connection with a drunken binge while on Scotland duty.

Ferguson and his club team-mate Allan McGregor have both been banned by Scotland for life for their behaviour after a World Cup qualifier against Holland last month.

They compounded the original offence by making V-sign gestures to photographers as they sat on the bench against Iceland at Hampden three days later and it was that, rather than the drinking session, which resulted in Rangers taking action against the pair.

Rangers boss Walter Smith said at the time that neither player would play for the club again, but he has since reviewed his stance and offered the pair a reprieve.

Despite that, Ferguson was still expected to be sold this summer with Zenit St Petersburg, now managed by former Gers chief Dick Advocaat, his most likely destination.
