Guehi urges England to ´stick together´ ahead of World Cup

Marc Guehi says England need to “stick together” after going winless in March as they turn their attention to the World Cup.

England, who were without Harry Kane and a host of key names, were beaten 1-0 by Japan at Wembley Stadium, with Kaoru Mitoma’s first-half goal proving the difference.

It followed a 1-1 draw with Uruguay four days earlier, with these being England’s last matches before Thomas Tuchel selects his squad for the World Cup.

The Three Lions put in a toothless performance – they had 19 shots overall, though only hit the target with four of them and produced just 0.9 expected goals (xG).

England were booed off after the underwhelming performance, and Guehi urged the team to stay united despite recent disappointments.

“We can’t sugarcoat it,” said Guehi. “It’s always disappointing.

“You want to be winning those games, but the most important [thing] is going to the World Cup and being ready for that.

“I think we’ve shown that in previous years, where maybe the last few games before the tournament haven’t been the best, but we’ve been there showing what we’re ready to do.

“It’s important we stay calm, we have each other’s backs, stick together in these moments, because it’s obviously not easy.

“But like I said, perspective, that’s one for me.”

England will face New Zealand and Costa Rica in their last pre-tournament friendlies in June before they open their World Cup campaign against Croatia on June 17.
