Hammers extend Wigan winless streak

West Ham extended Wigan’s worrying winless Premier League streak to eight on Wednesday as Carlton Cole’s goal saw them to a 1-0 victory.

However both sides finished with 10 men with Cole the first to see red in the first half and then Wigan had Lee Cattermole sent off as well, early in the second-half.

The first half of the match had belonged to Cole for good and bad reasons as he went from hero to villain in just three minutes.

The former Chelsea striker gave the Hammers the lead after a stunning passing move which saw Scott Parker, David Di Michele and the impressive Mark Noble involved, before Cole received the decisive pass from Noble and he slotted it past Chris Kirkland.

However just minutes later Cole was trudging off the pitch having been redcarded by referee Stuart Attwell – who earlier this season drew ridicule for awarding a goal that didn’t go into the net to Reading in a Championship game – for a second bookable offence after being judged to have gone too high on Emmerson Boyce.

Wigan, though, went level early in the seocnd-half – sadly for them it was in terms of playing personnel – as Cattermole, who had just been subjected to a dreadful tackle by Australian Lucas Neill, got a straight red card from Attwell for a two-footed tackle on Parker.

West Ham, though, suffered another what seemed to be serious injury blow midway through the second-half when Jack Collison was stretchered off after falling awkwardly on his knee, Israeli international Valon Behrami having suffered a season-ending injury at the weekend.
