Sascha Lewandowski will step down from his position as joint head coach at Bayer Leverkusen to work with the club’s youth team.
The 41-year-old has been working in conjunction with Sami Hyypia since April 2012, but he will take up a new role as youth head coach for club allowing the Finn to manage the first team on his own.
Lewandowski and Hyypia have guided Leverkusen to third place in the Bundesliga this season to guarantee UEFA Champions League football next season.
“I’m happy that I’ve been able to help over the past 14 months after taking charge of the first team alongside Sami Hyypia in a difficult situation,” he told the club’s official website.
“We now have a functioning team that has great potential and is playing good and successful football.
“It hasn’t been an easy decision as I have to give up the excellent collaboration with the players and the prospect of a great challenge in the Champions League.”
“We have performed brilliantly to overcome strong competition like Schalke 04,” he said. “That can’t be underestimated at all.
“In his new role, Sascha will continue to have a direct influence on the future look of our Bundesliga team, which will led by a strong coaching team around Sami Hyypia next season.”
Leverkusen managing director Wolfgang Holzhauser thanked Lewandowski for the hard work he had done to turn the fortunes of the club around and explained in a bit more detail why the decision had been made to change his role with the club.

liked to carry on working with Sascha Lewandowski as before,” he said. “After
careful consideration, we came to the conclusion that he feels more at
home with youth football.
“Sascha has already produced outstanding work
in that area over the years.”
