Liverpool fans cannot pin their hopes on Divock Origi

Young Belgian international striker Divock Origi is being linked with a move back to Liverpool in January

According to the Daily Mirror, Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is attempting to bring young Belgian striker Divock Origi back to the club in January from Lille, where he is on-loan.

However, if reports are to be believed any potential deal could cost the Reds a further £5million for a player they already own.

Blow

England striker Daniel Sturridge experienced yet another injury blow, as he picked-up a thigh injury that could rule him out of action for up to six weeks. The striker has made just three Premier League appearances for the Reds this season.

Liverpool are struggling in front of goal in the English top-flight, having scored just 14 league goals this season.

It has been well-documented that current Reds strikers Mario Balotelli, Rickie Lambert and Fabio Borini have failed to register a top-flight goal between them this season.

January

It seems Liverpool are now desperate for an injection of attacking talent in January, with Belgian youngster Origi already technically a Reds player he has emerged as an option.

Origi burst onto the international scene at the World Cup with national team Belgium, as at times he was selected ahead of highly-rated Everton teammate Romelu Lukaku. Liverpool reportedly fought off interest from Tottenham and Arsenal to sign the youngster from French club Lille after his impressive displays in Brazil.

The deal for Origi included a clause which would allow the striker to return to the Ligue One club on a season-long loan deal, which the French club insist will be honoured by the Merseysider’s.

Liverpool are hoping that Lille will change their minds if they are offered more money, believed to be around £5million, which would be bad business considering they already own the player.

Youngster

Divock Origi is regarded as a promising young striker, but at just 19 is mostly potential at the moment. A lot of people have talked up his ability, but like any young player it is not guaranteed that he will live-up to the hype surrounding him.

Lille have struggled this season and Origi has not scored in Ligue One since September. Origi is not yet prolific in front of goal at club level and has scored just three goals this season for Lille, although he has often been deployed on the wing or behind the main striker.

Origi is far from the finished article and Liverpool fans hoping that the youngsters possible arrival in January could save the Reds season may just be disappointed.

Struggling

Liverpool finished second in the Premier League last season and enjoyed a superb campaign. That season was always going to be hard to equal, especially after losing their two main strikers from last season, Luis Suarez to transfer and Daniel Sturridge to injury for the majority of the season.

The Reds struggles in front of goal seem to have prompted boss Brendan Rodgers to take action, and that action seems to be looking at bringing Origi back to the club earlier than expected. For Liverpool fans to pin their hopes of a season turnaround on a youngster is slightly clutching at straws.

Priority

Liverpool look far from challengers for the Premier League title, as the Reds are currently 15 points behind Premier League leaders Chelsea in the table. The Reds priority this season has to be to qualify for the Champions League, which they are currently odds of 2/1 to achieve.

The Merseysider’s form has to improve at some point, but if it does not then their chances of achieving a top four finish this season are very slim.

Needed

Divock Origi may be livelier than £16million Italian Balotelli in attack, but Liverpool need more than the Belgium international to save their season, because the Reds problems suddenly seem deeper than just the lack of a striker.

Liverpool needs the players already at the club to up their game for the rest of the season, if not then the Reds will experience a very disappointing campaign, whether Origi arrives in January or not.

Will Divock Origi be arriving at Liverpool in January?
