Martinez heading back to Athletic Bilbao

According to a recent report from Marca, Javi Martinez has agreed personal terms with Athletic Bilbao as he prepares to return to the club.

He has spent many years as a strong defensive presence with Bayern Munich, but now that he’s moving in the final few years of his career as a consistent force on the world stage, he seems to be favouring a somewhat sentimental move back home.

The fee is believed to be between €10 million and €12 million, and while some may consider that a steal, it does seem like the money aspect does really bother Bayern – especially after the successful season they just enjoyed.

Martinez is skillful yet combative and even if he’s deteriorated ever so slightly as the years have gone on, he still has the potential to guide Bilbao to a really strong campaign in La Liga this season.

If not, it’s still a fun transfer for them.
