Reading boss Brian McDermott has become the latest manager to voice his displeasure at the sacking of Nigel Adkins at Southampton.

McDermott thinks that Adkins has been treated unfairly after he was replaced by Argentine Mauricio Pochettino after guiding Southampton to two successive promotions and steering them away from the Premier League relegation zone.

“What I thought was sad was what Nigel Adkins has done for Southampton wasn’t even mentioned in that programme at the Everton game,” the Reading manager said after Saturday’s win over Sheffield United in the FA Cup.

“Let’s have a bit of respect. That’s not right and proper. What he has done for that club has been phenomenal. Two promotions … they are finding their way in the Premier League.”

McDermott, who has grown close to Adkins over the years hopes that his friend can find his way back into management.

“Nigel has earned the right to do so,” McDermott added when asked if Adkins will return to management straight away.

“He’s done a great job at both Scunthorpe and Southampton. I’m sure he won’t be out of it for long.”
