Mexico 0-0 Poland: Three Things We Learned

The FIFA World Cup is well underway with a parade of intriguing games taking place thus far, especially on Tuesday.

However, it was a day that also brought with it the first two goalless draws of the tournament, with the second being played out by Mexico and Poland. Today, we’re going to run through a few takeaways from a disappointing afternoon at Stadium 974.

Worst game so far

We’re just going to come out and say it – this was the worst game of the 2022 World Cup so far. Tunisia and Denmark also drew 0-0 but provided great entertainment, whereas Netherlands vs Senegal was incredibly dull but featured two goals. Mexico and Poland just never really seem to get going which is strange, considering there was quite a lot on the line in their opening game.

Lewandowski’s woes

Robert Lewandowski came into this tournament without having ever scored a goal at the World Cup – and that record is still firmly intact. The Polish sensation failed to convert from the spot in what would’ve given the Poles a huge lift, to say the least. The veteran forward has never been one to shy away from a challenge and you can bet he’ll do everything he can to bounce back, but this was hardly a reassuring start.

Wide open group

Just in case you hadn’t heard, Saudi Arabia managed to pull off one of the greatest upsets in World Cup history by defeating Argentina 2-1 yesterday. In doing so, they threw Group C wide open, topping the table with Argentina being sat in 4th place. Mexico vs Poland was seen as a shootout to determine who would make it through to the last 16 with Lionel Messi and friends but now, it really is anyone’s guess as to how this is going to an out, and that’s exactly how it should be.
