Moyes not expecting patience

Manchester United manager David Moyes has admitted he does not expect to be given time to deliver at Old Trafford.

Moyes was announced as United boss in May after Alex Ferguson announced his retirement in May following a 26-year spell with the club, and knows he will be expected to succeed immediately with the Premier League champions.

“I don’t think you can ever ask for time now,” the Scot said.

“All you can ask for is to be judged on how it goes. Time is something managers do not get now and it is a tough start.”

Moyes faces a difficult beginning to life with United, facing Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City in the first five games of their Premier League campaign, but the former Everton boss insists he is not under pressure from the club’s hierarchy.

“I have met the Glazers – Joel and Avi – both here and in New York and they have given me a lot of confidence to get on with the job,” he added.

“Their message was to take your time and do things the way you want to do it. There are no great expectations on how I do the job. They are not owners who interfere.”

The 50-year-old knows it will be difficult to follow in the footsteps of a manager who is widely considered to be one of the best of all time. However, he stressed he is relishing the challenge.

“I have heard so many people say that you don’t want to follow Sir Alex,” Moyes continued.

“A lot of good managers have said that you don’t want to take on that job, but he has left me a really good team and right now I feel fortunate.”
