Newell’s Old Boys sealed a first Argentine Primera Division title in nine years following Lanus’ defeat against Estudiantes on Wednesday.

Lanus had 45 minutes to save their season, as they played out the second half of their game with Estudiantes at Estadio Unico in La Plata that was abandoned 10 days ago following the death of a fan in clashes with police.

The teams started again with the score 2-0 in Estudiantes’ favour, which was not added to in the second ‘half’.

Guido Pizarro was sent off late in the game for Lanus to compound their misery, but it will be all smiles at the Estadio Marcelo Bielsa, with the title heading to Newell’s.

The Rosario outfit were almost relegated last term, but the return of ex-player Gerardo Martino as coach, sparked new life into the side and they finished second in the league’s Inicial phase.

And after dominating the Final tournament with 12 wins from 18 games, scoring 40 goals in the process, they have brought home their sixth title.

Newell’s could yet seal a double this term, as they are set to face Atletico Mineiro in the Copa Libertadores semi-finals in July.
