Norwich, Derby Cleared of Match-fixing Allegations

On October 4, 10-man Derby defeated Norwich at Carrow Road thanks to a late goal by Nathan Ellington. Irregular betting patterns concerning the game were reported in Asian gambling markets. The Football Association (FA) started an investigation, which now has been closed with both clubs being cleared.

It all began when a professional gambler detected “massive movement” in the Asian betting market in the build up to half-time in the Championship game between Norwich and Derby, and reported this to the Sunday Telegraph. The newspaper started an investigation and handed over its documentation to the FA and the Gambling Commission on Oct. 10. The FA and the Gambling Commission opened an official investigation on Oct. 13.

The involved clubs co-operated fully in the investigation, and stated that they had no concerns about the match. Both clubs have now been cleared of all match-fixing allegations.

“Based on the information gathered as a result of detailed enquiries, there is no evidence to suggest any irregularities around the progress or result of the game,” it’s said in a statement from the FA.

“The FA has made it clear that if fresh information comes to light which gives rise to concerns then the enquiry may be reopened.”

Norwich and Derby are pleased with the decision to close the investigation:

“I’m delighted the good name of Norwich City has been upheld and our reputation remains intact,” said Norwich chief executive Neil Doncaster.

“Both clubs said from the start that they were totally innocent of any wrongdoing. If anything they are extremely irritated that this was whipped into an unnecessary storm and it has been unfortunate for both clubs and the players involved in the game,” said a Derby County spokesperson.
