According to a recent report from Sky sources, Paul Scholes has been cleared and will be allowed to take over as the manager of Oldham Athletic within the next 24 hours. A board meeting was held in order to discuss whether there would be a conflict of interests due to his 10% stake in Salford City, who could be promoted to League Two this season. That would mean they’d go head to head with one another twice on the same season, but because he only has a backstage role, Scholes will indeed be allowed to proceed. However, he won’t be able to sign players from Salford or sell them to Salford.
Scholes marks the latest star from England’s ‘golden generation’ to make the transition over into management, and given where Oldham currently find themselves in the table, it’ll be interesting to see whether or not his hiring has an immediate effect on the club.
