Pep Clotet will leave his role as Birmingham City head coach at the end of the Championship season.

Birmingham are 16th in the table and eight points clear of the bottom three ahead of the English second-tier’s proposed restart on June 20.

The Blues announced on Monday that Clotet would step down from his position at the conclusion of the campaign in order to “explore other coaching opportunities”.

Clotet, 43, took over in June 2019, initially as an interim appointment, having previously served as assistant coach to Garry Monk.

“It’s been a really difficult decision to take because it’s a privilege to be part of the Blues family,” Clotet said.

“But it’s the best step for everyone and it allows the club to continue to move forward with their vision and strategy.

“I’m very grateful to the club, its board and the supporters for placing their faith in me to lead the team this season and to face up to the challenges involved in what’s been a key transition under really demanding circumstances.

“It’s now time for us to focus on the remainder of the season and for the club to continue building on these foundations.”

The club acknowledged Clotet’s work in promoting young players and improving their style of play this season in their statement confirming his departure.

Birmingham CEO Dong Ren added: “It’s a decision that is filled with sadness for us both. We value Pep very highly and we know how much he loves this club.”
